New Hampshire Volunteer of the Month for August

Susan Higgins

Concord ~ August 19, 2009

Volunteer NH and the Office of Governor John Lynch have presented Susan Higgins, of Manchester, with the NH Volunteer of the Month Award for August.

Susan has touched many lives through her years of volunteer service. For the past 6 ½ years Susan has been volunteering at the UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center in Goffstown – where she has worked with challenged children and adults to improve their physical, emotional, and psychological development through progressive therapies centered around horse riding.

“Susan generously gives of herself to help others,” states Kristen McGraw, Program Director of UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center. “Her compassion and dedication to both organizations is wonderful and enhances the experiences for all those that participate in the services she helps provide.”

Initially, Susan did not have a great deal expertise working with horses, but she trained tirelessly to improve her skills to better serve the organization and its students.

In addition to the UpReach Therapeutic Riding Center, Susan also volunteers with Personal Ponies, a non profit organization using ponies to help people with disabilities. Over the past five years, she and an amazing pony named Felipe have brought smiles to young and old alike at the countless schools and nursing homes they have visited.

The Volunteer of the Month award, established under Governor John Lynch and administered by Volunteer NH, recognizes outstanding individuals in the New Hampshire community for their dedication to service. Bellwether Community Credit Union, in partnership with Volunteer NH, is the Governor's Volunteer of the Month sponsor. Nominations for the awards are accepted year round and are also considered for the Spirit of New Hampshire awards in November.
