“My year of service has opened a whole new world for me.”

Congratulations to the more than 200 AmeriCorps members were recognized today by Volunteer NH for their dedication and year of community service at the 15th annual AmeriCorps Recognition Day event held at the Hampton Beach State Park pavilion.

“The many accomplishments of these full time volunteers are truly inspiring,” noted Shireen Tilley, NH, ME and VT state director for the Corporation for National and Community Service. “And with the expansion of National Service members in the state next year, we expect as many as 275 new volunteers to participate in NH service projects,” Tilley added.

AmeriCorps Recognition Day honored members who served four statewide community service programs; including City Year NH, NH Conservation Corps, PlusTime NH, and AmeriCorps Victims Assistance Program.

Their impact on NH citizens has been direct and meaningful. City Year NH members worked as tutors and mentors with more than 700 middle school students, providing more than 33,000 hours in service. NH Conservation Corps members devoted their efforts to rebuilding and restoring public land. PlusTime NH has reached out to more than 2,000 youth in providing health and wellness programs. And, AmeriCorps Victims Assistance Program has assisted more than 900 survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

“There is still so much to do, so many people to help, one year just doesn't seem like enough,” said Mimi Hallowell, AmeriCorps member with the Victims Assistance Program who has been serving residents in Straftford and Rockingham counties. Mimi has volunteered for a second year of AmeriCorps service and described her first year as “Stressful, chaotic, yet extremely rewarding. My year of service opened a whole new world for me.”

Volunteer NH is a nonprofit organization that, among other volunteer related services, administers volunteer programs such as AmeriCorps, New Hampshire Citizen Corps, and NH VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters), to provide a variety of services since 2001.
